Who is eligible to purchase a Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass)?

The eligibility requirements of JAPAN RAIL PASS has been updated. Click here for more information

1. You are a foreign tourist visiting Japan from abroad for sight-seeing, under the entry status of “temporary visitor.” “Temporary visitor” entry status, according to Japanese Immigration Law, allows a stay in Japan for 15 days or 90 days for “sight-seeing etc.” If you apply for a “stay for sight-seeing” when you enter Japan, entry personnel will stamp your passport as “Temporary visitor” as shown below. Such and only persons that have a passport bearing this stamp can use a Japan Rail Pass.

* If you use an automated gate, no stamp will be applied to your passport. Either use a manned automated gate or ask a clerk to apply the stamp to your passport. However, customers who have a “registered user card” under the Trusted Traveler Program will be required to show the card to confirm the “Temporary Visitor” status.

2. Japanese people living abroad who meets the following conditions.

People who have both their Japanese passport and written proof – obtained from the embassy or legation of Japan in the foreign country where they live – that they have been living legally in the country for 10 consecutive years or more.  For the detailed information, please click here.

* You must present both your passport and proof of eligibility to purchase an Exchange Order in a country other than Japan, and to exchange your Exchange Order for a Japan Rail Pass in Japan.

<For individual who possess passports issued by both Japan and other country>
In accordance with the Japanese Immigration Law, please present your Japanese passport to immigration when entering the country. In this case, your Japanese passport and a documentation verifying your stay in another country for 10 or more consecutive years, such as a certificate issued by a government office overseas will be required.
