Before You Travel

There are certain travel regulations and measures in place to enter into Japan and the United States. Our top priority is to inform you the latest information, but please also visit the following government websites for more details and the most up-to-date information before you travel.

Entering Japan From The United States

Requirement to enter Japan

Effective June 1, 2022, all passengers from the United States (which is listed as Group “Blue” here) are no longer require testing upon arriving in Japan and self-quarantine, regardless of vaccine status. 

Individual tourists may visit Japan starting October 11, 2022, subject to vaccine or testing requirements. Tourists with U.S. passports no longer need a visa to stay up to three months.

Travel Requirements for all passengers

From September 7, 2022, all passengers returning and entering Japan who have a valid vaccination certificate will not be required to submit a negative test certificate within 72 hours before departure.
Passengers who have not met a vaccine status upon entering Japan must present a negative Covid-19 test result certificate within 72 hours prior to U.S. departure. If you are unable to present a valid certificate at check-in, you will be denied boarding the flight as you are not permitted to enter Japan.

Japanese government recommends to use the prescribed format (Japanese/English). If you are unable to use the prescribed format, you may use arbitrary format, however, the following contents and conditions must be included to be valid;

(1) Name
(2) Date of birth
(3) Valid Testing method
(4) Valid Testing Sample
(5) Specimen collection date and time
(6) Test result 
(7) Name of medical institution
(8) Date of issue
*All items must be written in Japanese or English.

Visit Japan Web is a web service for smooth arrival procedure at Japan’s airport. You can expedite your quarantine, immigration, and custom declaration procedure by registering through Visit Japan Web.

Visit Japan Web service is currently available for those who entering Japan from Narita, Haneda, Chubu Centrair, Kansai, New Chitose(Hokkaido), Fukuoka and Naha(Okinawa) Airport.

New measure for foreign nationals entering Japan (VISA and ERFS)

  • From October 11 2022, the following measures will be taken:

    • Visa exemption measures will be resumed.
    • In principle, all passengers returning and entering from countries and regions other than “countries and regions where it has been confirmed that mutation strains other than Omicron strains are dominant” will be not required to take measures such as immigration inspection, waiting at home or accommodation after entering the country, follow-up during the waiting period, and non-use of public transportation.

Entering The United States from Japan

Requirement to enter the United States

As of June 12, 2022, the CDC no longer requires air passengers to show a negative COVID-19 test result, or show documentation of recovery from COVID-19, prior to boarding a flight to the United States. The CDC’s Order requiring proof of vaccination for non-U.S. citizen nonimmigrants to travel to the United States is still in effect. Required : Contact Information
All air passengers to the United States are required to provide contact information to airlines before boarding flights to the United States.

Recommended : Get Tested before and after travel
CDC still recommend for all passengers to get tested with a viral test no more than 3 days before traveling to the United States. If you are not up-to date with Covid-19 vaccine, CDC recommends staying home and self-quarantine for a full 5 days after travel. For all passengers (regardless of vaccine status), CDC recommends getting tested with a viral test 3-5 days after travel. For more details, please visit CDC website.

Required : Proof of Covid-19 Vaccination 
You must be fully vaccinated with the primary series of an accepted COVID-19 vaccine and provide a proof of vaccine status before boarding the flights to the United States. If you are unable to present a valid vaccine certificate at check-in, you will be denied boarding the flight as you are not permitted to enter the United States. *Only limited exceptions apply such as children under 18 years of age.

All air passengers to the United States are required to provide contact information to airlines before boarding flights to the United States.

Required : Travel Documentation
Make sure to have your required travel documents such as passport, visa or for all Visa Waiver Program travelers, ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization).

Recommended : Get Tested before travel
CDC still recommend for all passengers to get tested with a viral test no more than 3 days before traveling to the United States. 

Required : Get Tested and self-quarantine after travel 
If you are NOT fully vaccinated and traveled through an exception, get tested with a viral test 3-5 days after travel. Stay home and self-quarantine for a full 5 days even if you test negative. (If you have a documentation of recovered from Covid-19 in the past 90 days, testing and quarantine is not required). If you test positive or develop Covid-19 symptoms, isolate yourself.

Recommended : Stay home and self-quarantine after travel
If you are fully vaccinated but not up-to-date with your vaccine, CDC recommends staying home for a full 5 days.

Recommended : Get Tested after travel
For all travelers (regardless of vaccine status), CDC recommends to get tested with a viral test 3-5 days after travel. If you test positive or develop Covid-19 symptoms, isolate yourself.
